Thanks for requesting my free seven-lesson anger management stress e-course"How to Permanently Control Anger"Let's Continue With... Lesson #6: Stop Worry in its Tracks !
Hello again. I'm Bob Miller ND, and this is part six in my anger management e-course on how stress is created in your life, the specific emotions you feel with stress, and the simple, easy steps you can take to significantly reduce anger in your life. When you reduce how life events create stress for you, your success in relationships, school or career will skyrocket and your self esteem and self-worth will increase dramatically, and your anger will decrease significantly. A Brief Review To review, the concept of the Tranquilities program is that sorrow issues in life create feelings of loss and grief. Next, you experience fear and then anger. Then, self-esteem and feelings of self-worth are reduced and finally, all of this creates worry, over thinking or anxiety. Let's examine what happens when you worry, think too much or become anxious. It generally consists of:
If this pattern keeps going, your mind is constantly preoccupied with thoughts of the past and thoughts of the future, while less and less time is spent on the present moment. This worry can be a significant cause of anger as well. Does This Ever Happen to You ? Have you ever been reading a book, or someone speaking to you, or trying to meditate or pray, and realize your mind is off somewhere else, replaying a past event or worrying about a future event? How would your life improve, if you stayed focused on the present? When you are absorbed in the past or the future, you are more likely to make mistakes, have accidents, lose things and miss opportunities. As you are able to reduce the "worry", you can focus your mental attention on those things that will be to your benefit. Ever Been Worried Sick? There is an old adage that says "I was worried sick". There appears to be a connection between the stomach and worry. That's why performers get "butterflies" in their stomach before a performance. However, I'll go one step further and make the suggestion that I believe worry can, in some situations, actually increase the chance that the thing you are worried about could happen. Let me explain...... Lets say you have to speak to someone, make a presentation, or any situation which you are apprehensive. In the days and night before, you start worrying about what may happen. You think of how you could mess up, how others may not like what you have to say, and your mind keeps going and going. By the time you are ready for the event, you are so nervous that you increase the chance of making the mistakes you were afraid of making. Here's Some Examples. Lets say you were mugged and your wallet or purse was stolen. As a result, you could either keep replaying the mugging in your mind, thinking about how this could have been avoided or why this happened. Or, you could be constantly worried that this will happen again. At the extreme, its possible that you could get so worried that you would never want to leave your house. This worry could then be projected into other areas of your life. If someone is 10 minutes late, your mind immediately begins to think a mugger knocked them unconscious and they are laying somewhere hurt. For another example, you begin a personal relationship and it doesn't work out very well. You could preoccupy yourself with thinking through everything that you may have done wrong, what they have done wrong, why bad things happen, why God is punishing you, etc. Or you can project these worries into the future, and be so concerned that it won't work out again, that you act in ways that decrease the chance of success when another opportunity arises. Or, you can stop the worry, and move on with your life. Here's How You Can Stop Worry in its Tracks The Three Steps to Releasing Worry
So Let's Get Started With..... Step # 1 Discovering
How Sorrow Issues Created Worry or Over Thinking Think about how sorrow issues in your life creates worry in you. Or, just recall some things that you find yourself worrying about. Think about and discover if you replay the sorrow issue, worry if it will happen again or project the worry onto other people and events in your life. Decide if you replay past events, worry if specific sorrows will happen again, or just feel worried or anxious that something else may go wrong in your life or to those you care for. Step # 2 Picturing and Imagining a Peaceful Mind Picturing and imagining how your life will be when you no longer worry, over think or feel anxious is the first step in learning to stop worrying. So Let's Get Started and ......Answer the following questions for the ways you worry or the things you worry about; Question # 1 "What would it feel like if you no longer were worried about or constantly thought about ________________ ? Then...Move On To..... Question # 2 How would you act or behave differently if you no longer worried or were anxious? Question # 3 How would it feel, if you acted and behaved in the way you just described? As we discussed before, just answering these questions puts you on the path to changing your thoughts, feelings and behavior for the better. So Let's Finish With..... Step # 3 Use Guided Imagery to Restore Your Self-Esteem It's for this reason that Tranquilities for Persons Experiencing Stress includes the CD and aromatherapy blend called Serenity. The CD gently walks you through the mental imaging process needed to let go of worry of sorrow issues and helps you find a peaceful mind. In your next lesson, I will explain in full detail what Guided Imagery is, how it works, and how you can use it to create new positive ways of thinking, but until then, here's a brief overview of the Serenity CD
This entire process only takes about 20 minutes. It may sound simplistic, but it is a powerful technique that will teach you a fast and effective way to stop worry in it's tracks.
